Overview
tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) is known for its role in organic synthesis, where it acts as an effective oxidizing agent, converting olefins into alcohols, ketones, or aldehydes. Its versatility extends to other compounds like amines, sulfides, and selenides. In the industrial sector, TBHP is used in the polymerization process, serving as a free radical initiator for materials like acrylates and silicone monomers. This leads to the creation of various polymer products. Additionally, TBHP is used in surface treatments, rubber additives, and as a cross-linking agent for polymers. Its role also spans into the biomedical field, where it is utilized as a reagent in DNA sequencing, contributing to advancements in biological research and diagnostics.
Technical Selection Guide
Product Overview
tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP, CAS 75-91-2) is a high-temperature organic hydroperoxide with 17.78% active oxygen — the highest in the LAAP hydroperoxide range — and a 10-hour half-life temperature of 164°C. It is both an industrial free-radical initiator and a widely used oxidising agent in organic synthesis.
Half-Life & Temperature Profile
TBHP decomposes at 164°C (10 h), 185℃ (1 h) and 207℃ (0.1 h), which makes it one of the most thermally stable peroxides in the catalogue. This stability is why it can be handled at ambient temperature with relative safety, and why it is used where the initiator must survive a hot monomer feed or a high-temperature reaction step. In synthesis, TBHP is used as an oxidant at moderate temperatures — converting olefins to alcohols, ketones or aldehydes, and oxidising amines, sulfides and selenides.
Selection Within the Same Family
TBHP (164°C) is the highest-temperature hydroperoxide in the LAAP range, above TAHP (CAS 3425-61-4, 165°C — effectively equivalent), PMHP (CAS 80-47-7, 128°C) and DBHP (CAS 26762-93-6, 129°C). Choose TBHP when the process runs above 150°C or when a chemically stable oxidant is required. For lower-temperature radical generation, step down to the dialkyl or peroxyester families rather than to another hydroperoxide.
Quality, REACH & Documentation
TBHP is supplied as a colourless liquid with 17.78% active oxygen, typically as a 70% solution in water or in an organic solvent depending on the application. Typical controls are assay, active oxygen and water content. Each batch ships with a CoA; REACH-compliant SDS and a TDS with the half-life table are available.
Packaging, MOQ & Lead Time
Standard packing is 20 kg or 180 kg polyethylene drums, with smaller sizes on request. SADT is 80°C and the recommended storage range is 0-40°C. Minimum order quantity starts at 25 kg, and quotations are returned within 24 hours.
