Overview
TBPMH is a highly effective polymerization initiator primarily used for the production of Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) in both tubular and autoclave processes. It is also extensively employed in the polymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile. In the thermoset industry, TBPMH acts as a medium-temperature curing agent for unsaturated polyester resins, making it suitable for SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) and BMC (Bulk Molding Compound) formulations requiring precise cure control.

Product Overview
tert-Butyl peroxy-3,5,5-trimethylhexanoate (TBPMH, CAS 13122-18-4) is a medium-temperature peroxyester with 6.95% active oxygen and a 10-hour half-life temperature of 94°C. It is a primary initiator for the production of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) in both tubular and autoclave processes, and is also used in styrene and acrylate polymerization and in unsaturated polyester curing.
Half-Life & Temperature Profile
TBPMH's half-life series (135℃ at 0.1 h, 114℃ at 1 h, 94℃ at 10 h) gives a process window of roughly 110-150°C. In LDPE reactors TBPMH is typically used in the mid-section of the initiator cascade, after a faster peroxydicarbonate has started the reaction and before the high-temperature dialkyl peroxide takes over at the peak. The choice of injection point is governed by the 1-hour half-life, which is the point at which the initiator contributes the bulk of its radical flux.
Selection Within the Same Family
Within the LAAP peroxyester family, TBPMH (94°C) sits between TBPEH (CAS 3006-82-4, 73°C) and TBPA (CAS 107-71-1, 100°C). Choose TBPMH when the process runs 110-150°C and a liquid initiator with good thermal stability is required. Its branched 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoate group improves solubility in non-polar monomers compared with linear peroxyesters, which is why it is favoured in LDPE and in styrenic systems.

TBPMH is a clear liquid, ≥97.0% pure, with a colour specification below 30 Pt-Co. Typical controls are assay, active oxygen, colour and water content. Each batch ships with a CoA; REACH-compliant SDS and a TDS with the half-life table are available.
